INFORMATION ON THE VALIDITY OF THE SEA BOAT LICENSE
The boating license for the sea is an official pleasure boat license. It is valid internationally and allows you to move your watercraft within the 3-mile zone. This means: 3 nautical miles seaward, calculated from the baseline. The boating license for the sea allows you to drive motorized vehicles/sailing yachts and jet skis with a propulsion power of more than 15 HP. There is no limit to the length of the boat at sea.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ACQUIRING A SEA BOAT LICENSE
- Participation in the exam is possible from 15 years and 9 months. The inland and sea boating license is issued by the examination board at the age of 16

- Template "Medical certificate for recreational boating license applicants"Submission of a valid driving license, alternatively a certificate of good conductFor minors, the signature of the legal guardian is sufficient
TIP:
The sea sports boating license is a prerequisite for higher qualifications, such as SKS or SSS. If you plan to drive yachts later, this boating license is a good option. Supplemented if necessary by the SRC, the Short Range Certificate, it is a good step towards being able to travel safely on the world's oceans. Theory course
Recreational boating license, theory lessons
- Sundays from 09.00 - approx. 1700 hrs --> SBF - Sea Day (theory only, no driving lessons for the course participants)
FURTHER INFORMATION:
- Arrange boating lessons at the same time or in good time (at least 3 weeks in advance, if possible) by telephone at the boating school. If required, you can repeat the SBF theory course - at no extra cost - at the Rhine-Moselle boating school on one of the next weekend courses. A request by email is sufficient. It is best to start answering the official exam questionnaires at home immediately after the SBF course. This is the best way to remember what you have learned and to prepare for your exam straight away.
EXAMS:
- The theoretical and practical exams can - but do not have to - be taken on the same day. If you feel ready for the sports boating license exam, choose an exam date that suits you. Then register for the exam (at least 7 days in advance). You pay the exam fees directly to the committee. You can find all the information on our Exams page.
ISSUE OF DRIVING LICENSE:
- After passing the SBF inland or sea exam at the DSV, the boating license is issued and sent by the Federal Printing Office. If you are in a hurry, the DSV can also issue you with a provisional sports boating license. If you would like this, please apply for and pay for it when registering for the exam.
